Golden-hour view of Ocracoke village harbor with boats and lighthouse

Ocracoke Island

You can only reach Ocracoke by boat or small plane, and that has shaped everything about it. Sixteen miles of protected shoreline, a single tucked-away village, wild ponies grazing on the dunes — this little island at the southern tip of the Outer Banks has a character all its own, and it's woven into the spirit of our shop.

A Village at the Edge of the Atlantic

Ocracoke village sits at the island's southern end, clustered around Silver Lake harbor. The streets are narrow and shaded, lined with live oaks, picket fences and weathered cottages. It's the kind of place where you park the car and walk or bike for the rest of your stay. The whole island is part of the Cape Lookout and Cape Hatteras coastal landscape that the National Park Service helps protect, which is why the beaches remain so wonderfully undeveloped.

History in the Sand

Ocracoke's past is the stuff of legend. The notorious pirate Blackbeard met his end in these waters in 1718, and Ocracoke Inlet was once one of the busiest shipping passages on the East Coast. The Ocracoke Lighthouse, built in 1823, is among the oldest still in operation in the United States. Families here trace their roots back centuries, and you can still hear traces of the old island brogue in the way longtime residents speak.

The Island Pace

What visitors remember most is the slowness — in the best sense. Mornings on the beach, afternoons drifting between small shops and seafood shacks, evenings watching the light go gold over the harbor. Ocracoke rewards people who linger. The official North Carolina travel guide calls the Outer Banks a string of barrier islands unlike anywhere else on the coast, and Ocracoke is its quietest, most timeless link.

Why It Matters to Us

A shop takes on the personality of its place. Ocracoke's mix of warmth, whimsy and handmade self-reliance is exactly what you'll find on our shelves. When you bring home something from Over the Moon, you're bringing home a little of the island, too. Browse the gift guide or learn about the shop to feel the connection for yourself.
