Handmade treasures from over 100 North American artisans
The welcoming interior of the Over the Moon gift shop

About the Shop

Over the Moon proudly showcases the work of more than one hundred North American artists. It began the way the best small shops do — with someone who loved beautiful, handmade things and wanted to share them.

Rooted in Ocracoke

The shop's family has deep roots on Ocracoke Island. Their ancestors were already living here at the time of the very first National Census in 1790, when the village was a tiny, hard-to-reach community of fishermen and boat pilots at the edge of the Atlantic. Generations later, that same connection to the island runs through everything the shop does. Opening Over the Moon meant building a livelihood close to home, raising children near family, and keeping a small piece of Ocracoke's welcoming spirit alive on Main Road.

How the Collection Comes Together

There's no algorithm behind what lands on the shelves. The buying is personal: pieces are chosen by hand, from artists whose work resonates, met at trade shows and art fairs across the country. The rule has always been simple — buy what you love, from makers you believe in. The result is a collection that feels curated rather than stocked, where every item earned its place.

This approach is also a quiet act of support. As organizations like the Americans for the Arts often point out, independent artists rely on shops, fairs and patrons willing to choose the handmade over the mass-produced. Every purchase here helps a working artist keep working.

What People Say

Over the years, the same warm phrases have echoed through the door:

"My favorite shop on the island."

"You have so many fun things!"

"I always see something new."

"Everything in here is so unique."

That's the highest praise a gift shop can hope for — to be the place people return to, season after season, knowing they'll find something they've never seen anywhere else.
